Week 9 Report: Colt Takes Down Patriots

November 9th, 2010 in Weekly Report |

In just his 3rd NFL start, Colt McCoy earned his second victory, this time defeating New England 34-14. The win comes just one game after leading the Browns to a surprising victory over New Orleans, with Colt performing solidly in both upsets over Super Bowl contenders.

The highlight of the day came from a 16-yard rushing TD in the 3rd quarter, the first running score of his career (video), with Colt reaching the end zone with a nice dive for the pylon.

Colt commented on the TD in true humble form.

“I was just trying to get a first down,” said Colt, “and the receivers made some great blocks, and it turned into a touchdown.”

Tom Brady gave his props to Colt after the game.

“I’ve been in that spot (as a young, injury-replacement quarterback), but never as a rookie. He did well,” said Brady

Colt completed just 14 of 19 passes but played mistake-proof football and threw no interceptions.

Phil Dawson pitched in for the Browns, scoring 10 points off 2 FGs and 4 XPs.

Colt’s former favorite target target Jordan Shipley caught 4 passes for 47 yards for Cincinnati on Monday Night Football. Shipley had a chance to tie the game with a catch on the 5-yard line on the final play but a jarring hit from James Harrison knocked the ball out to seal a Pittsburgh win.

Teammate Cedric Benson carried the ball 18 times for 54 yards, and added a TD late in the game to bring the Bengals within a score in the 4th quarter. Benson also caught 2 passes for 20 yards.

“I ran in the middle of two guys,” Shipley said. “I felt like I had it, and they knocked it out of there.”

Roy Williams continued his streak of quiet performances, this week catching just 1 pass 6 yards for struggling (understatement) Dallas. Roy has caught just 5 passes for 55 yards in the past 4 weeks, following a great Week 3, 5 and 6.

Roy took a big hit in the 3rd quarter from Nick Collins, who was flagged for a personal foul for his helmet-to-helmet hit. Roy came off the field but later said he was fine and appealed to commissioner Roger Goodell not to fine Collins.

“Commissioner Goodell, don’t fine the guy,” Williams said. “It wasn’t that bad of a deal, he shouldn’t get fined. It was a football play, a football player making a football play. No injury, no harm.

Quentin Jammer had a season-best 6 tackles in a San Diego victory over Houston.

Jammal Charles ran the ball 10 times for 53 yards and added 5 receptions for 47 yards, one week after his best performance of the season.

JC leads the NFL in yards-per-attempt and ranks 6th in total rushing yards.

Teammate Derrick Johnson had 5 tackles and forced a Darren McFadden fumble (video).

DJ currently ranks 15 in the NFL in tackles.

UPDATE: DJ signed a 5-year extension with Kansas City on Monday for $15 million in guaranteed money and potential of $34 million after putting together his best season so far.

Nitpicky point, but Colt was actually 14 of 19. Thanks!

Not nitpicky. I want to give credit where credit is due! I made the fix and also added an update on DJ signing a contract extension.
