Mack Brown: ‘Vince Should be Awarded the Trophy’

August 30th, 2010 in Player News | Tags:

Mack Brown believes Vince Young should be given the 2005 Heisman Trophy if the Heisman Trophy Trust takes it back from Reggie Bush, he told the Dan Patrick radio show audience on Monday.

“If they take it away, I think Vince should be awarded the trophy. Vince was second in the voting, so even if they re-voted I would like to see Vince get it,” said Brown. (listen to the segment)

Bush edged out Young in the 2005 Heisman race by receiving 2,541 votes, 933 votes more than Young. The voting took place before the two stars dueled in the National Championship game.

Months ago, the NCAA ruled Bush ineligible for the 2005 season after allegations arose that he received gifts from sports marketers while playing at USC. New USC athletics director Pat Haden has already returned the University’s copy of the trophy, and Haden has urged Bush to do the same.

The Heisman Trophy Trust announced in July that it would begin considering the fate of the trophy, but no time table for a decision was ever announced. So right now, any talk of handing over the trophy to Young is strictly hypothetical.

What do you think? Should Vince be given the trophy? If so, should he accept it?

It’s “accept the award,” not “except the award.”

Vince had a spectacular season, and embarrassed USC. The Horns were just unbeatable with him. Alas, the voters choose before the MNC game.
