Cleveland rookie Colt McCoy started for the first time and completed all 13 passing attempts for 131 yards in a 13-10 preseason win over Chicago on Thursday.

Cleveland rookie Colt McCoy started for the first time and completed all 13 passing attempts for 131 yards in a 13-10 preseason win over Chicago on Thursday.

Before Thursday’s game, McCoy had completed just 15 passes for 101 yards with two interceptions and a 57.7 QB rating in his preseason campaign.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer suggested in late August that McCoy’s roster spot was not completely safe, and he risked being cut before the season even started.

The news outlet backtracked on the statement just days later, saying McCoy was expected to make the team, according to their league sources.

With the risk of being cut averted, the question turns to McCoy’s spot on the depth chart and the chances of him seeing the field this season.

McCoy will likely finish the preseason third on the Browns’ depth chart, behind Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace.

What do you think? Will McCoy see any regular season action this season?

The NFL issued a $400,000 fine against Cleveland’s Shaun Rogers, but is not suspending him after Rogers was arrested for carrying a semi-automatic handgun into Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in April.

The fine, equal to one game’s pay, falls under the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy.

Commissioner Roger Goodell likely took into account the fact that Rogers recently assisted police in stopping a drunk driver near the Browns’ training grounds. Police praised Rogers for his action.

Charges were dismissed soon after the incident, upon Rogers’ completion of a volunteer and gun class program. Rogers initially faced a felony charge and up to 18 months in prison before charges were dropped.

Rogers, who has not practiced this summer since injuring his leg last season, is appealing the NFL’s decision.

Mack Brown believes Vince Young should be given the 2005 Heisman Trophy if the Heisman Trophy Trust takes it back from Reggie Bush, he told the Dan Patrick radio show audience on Monday.

“If they take it away, I think Vince should be awarded the trophy. Vince was second in the voting, so even if they re-voted I would like to see Vince get it,” said Brown. (listen to the segment)

Bush edged out Young in the 2005 Heisman race by receiving 2,541 votes, 933 votes more than Young. The voting took place before the two stars dueled in the National Championship game.

Months ago, the NCAA ruled Bush ineligible for the 2005 season after allegations arose that he received gifts from sports marketers while playing at USC. New USC athletics director Pat Haden has already returned the University’s copy of the trophy, and Haden has urged Bush to do the same.

The Heisman Trophy Trust announced in July that it would begin considering the fate of the trophy, but no time table for a decision was ever announced. So right now, any talk of handing over the trophy to Young is strictly hypothetical.

What do you think? Should Vince be given the trophy? If so, should he accept it?

Fielding the ultimate team of current NFL horns, here's the offense.

Explanation:

Our intention is to get the best players on the field and let that dictate our formation. So, we’re going with the I formation for a couple of reasons.

First off, we’re thin at wide receiver. Limas Sweed hasn’t produced at this level, so the battle is between Jordan Shipley and Quan Cosby for the second WR spot, with Shipley taking a slight edge. Secondly, we have the ability to feature a good TE and FB, so Jermichael Finley and Ahmard Hall get the nod.

With Mike Williams missing the 2010 season due to health reasons, choosing the offensive line wasn’t too difficult.

Lineup/Formation:

L. Davis — K. Studdard — L. Sendlein — D. Dockery — J. Blalock — J. Finley

Roy Williams — — — — — — — — — — Vince Young — — — — — — — — — — Jordan Shipley

Ahmard Hall

Cedric Benson

Alternatives worth considering:

Swapping Cedric Benson out for Jamaal Charles, who worked better alongside Vince Young in college

Featuring two TEs with no FB to get Bo Scaife on the field. Scaife would get the nod over David Thomas because of Scaife’s consistent productivity while becoming Young’s top target on the Tennessee Titans.

Cedric Griffin might miss the season opener against New Orleans on September 9th, as the Minnesota Vikings player continues recovering from torn a torn ACL in his left knee. Griffin injured his knee in the NFC Championship game against the Saints last season, and the recovery typically takes six to nine months to heal.

Griffins status remains unclear, with different Vikings coaches giving conflicting updates. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said on Monday that he would miss the opener, but head coach Brad Childress has not ruled him out, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Griffin began off-season camp on the PUP list but can be activated at any time. Griffin started in all the Vikings’ games last season.

First-round pick Earl Thomas signed a five-year, $21 million contract over the weekend and has immediately moved into the top position on the Seattle Seahawks depth chart, alongside veteran Lawyer Milloy, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Thomas plans to spend a large chunk of the money on a new house for his parents, whose previous home was destroyed by Hurricane Rita in 2005.

Meanwhile, St. Louis Rams’ GM Billy Devaney mentioned Chris Ogbonnaya as the player to watch when discussing Steven Jackson’s backup running back with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“But the guy we all have confidence in, too, and he showed flashes last season, is Chris Ogbonnaya. Especially on third down, if you’re going to be in there on passing downs, you know they’re throwing the kitchen sink at you; you better be able to hang in there and figure out which guy to block. Ogbonnaya is super smart. He’s got really good hands and he’s a hard runner.”

Ogbonnaya has carried the ball 140 times for 597 yards and 8 touchdowns since entering the league in 2005.

Cedric Benson and Vince Young both avoided the wrath of Roger Goodell this week, and will not be suspended for their separate off-season altercations.

Benson was charged with assault in June after allegedly hitting an employee at a local Austin bar. Benson denied any wrongdoing, and Cincinnati Bengal’s coach Marvin Lewis said Benson was “sucker punched.”

In 2008, Benson was arrested for both driving and boating while intoxicated on separate occasions.

Meanwhile, Young avoided suspension from Goodell after his involvement in a fight last month at a Dallas strip club, which was caught on camera.

Young was apparently provoked by a man flashing the “horns down” hand sign. He has since apologized to the Tennessee Titans organization, teammates, family and friends since receiving the misdemeanor assault citation.

Third-round pick Jordan Shipley signed a four-year deal on Tuesday worth $2.54 million with a $757,000 signing bonus. Fourth-round pick Roddrick Muckelroy also agreed to terms on a four-year deal worth $2.2 million with a $425,000 signing bonus on Tuesday.

Shipley’s signing all but guarantees him a spot on among a crowded wide receiver corp in Cincinnati. Terrell Owens also inked a deal with the Bengals this week, adding to the depth at that position.

The Bengals are likely to take six receivers among a group that includes Chad Ochocinco, Antonio Bryant, Andre Caldwell, Matt Jones, Maurice Purify, Freddie Brown and Owens.

Quan Cosby is also competing for a roster spot, but the addition of Owens to the squad greatly reduces the likelihood of this happening.

The question of who makes the Bengals final roster at the receiver position remains one of the most intriguing storyline this off-season.
